In addition to serving in a number of political posts during his life, he also wrote numerous influential articles and essays. Brown, on the other hand, was a prominent abolitionist, lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian. Born into slavery in Kentucky, he was working on riverboats based in St. Louis, Missouri, when he escaped to Ohio. He began to work for abolitionist causes, making his way to Buffalo, New York, and later Boston, Massachusetts. He was a prolific writer, beginning with an account of his escape to freedom and experience under slavery.
Baumrind says these parents “are obedience- and status-oriented, and expect their orders to be obeyed without explanation.” They are often described as domineering and dictatorial. Their approach is “spare the rod, spoil the child.” They expect children to obey without question. While these parents have high demands, they are not very responsive to their children. Although the landscape may be difficult to navigate, white educators can take some steps to build trust and lessen resistance from Black parents.

Black Boy is a moving account of his childhood and young manhood in the South.
